Hand-processed print in the post

After a busy week I arrived home from work last Friday  to a beautiful hand-processed print in the post from my cousin Dan. It really made me smile, in fact, it completely made my day. Last summer I went to visit him in Devon and we spent a few days  wandering and exploring the landscape and clicking away our ever-growing collection of vintage cameras.  This photo was taken when we weere walking along an old railway line near Tavistock.

On this particular day I had borrowed Dan's Yashica Mat and had spent the morning getting to grips with the viewfinder.

Here are a few photos  from our adventures.

A few weeks ago I was asked by the lovely people at Hotcourses to pen a few words about my photography journey and hopefully inspire others to pick up a camera. Read the full interview  here.

An English girl in New York

28 May 14

Posted at 9:17

Earlier this month I had the absolute pleasure of spending a fine few days in the Big Apple. The city was emerging from a long cold winter and spring had finally sprung. Magnificent cherry blossoms flowered in spectacular springtime displays of splendour. Staying with friends Vicky and Neil in the picturesque leafy West Village I had a wonderful taste of the New York lifestyle. Dearest Lucinda is a seasoned New Yorker now (she's been so many times she's practically a local) so we explored to the max.

Springtime is a wonderful time to visit and I spent time perusing art galleries (the MOMA as well as the lesser-known galleries of 24 th street), sampling local produce at Chelsea Market and of course an obligatory (and very much enjoyed) visit to Central Park.

Vicky and Neil were the perfect hosts and I felt so at home in their lovely apartment alongside a moggie called Molly, their adorable British Blue.

Helena and Russell's Scottish wedding at Stoke Newington Town Hall

06 March 14

Posted at 7:35

The end of January - Burns Night to be precise - is a fabulous time for a wedding. After the excitement of Christmas, the new year is cold, dark and miserable to say the least. Resolutions made in good faith - to eat less, drink less and spend less - are seldom kept so it's little wonder spirits are low at this time of year. Cue, a wonderful wedding. Just what the doctor ordered to brighton the mood and cheer up the darkest of winter days. The mood lifts and hope and promise fill the air once more. No need to splash out on a mini break, a wedding will do just fine. The couple in question were Helly and Russell, who got married at  Stoke Newington Town Hall in London on Burns Night - a crisp, fresh January Saturday.

.

I met the girls at the award winning  Bethnal Green Town Hall Hotel in the morning where they had spent the night and were getting ready. The atmosphere was relaxed, the girls busied themselves with last-minute preparations and hair and make up began. Sun light streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows basking our faces.

.

Meanwhile the groom and ushers - wearing tartan and kilts - prepared at home. The whole day was filled with live music - guests were greeted by the sound of bagpipes being played on the steps outside the town hall, friends sang during the ceremony, Helly's mum sang during the reception drinks and her brother's band played later on. The evening was filled with dancing and merriment and the celebrations continued long into the night.

Equine photo shoot with Beverley and Sunny

22 February 14

Posted at 5:44

Last November I spent a lovely afternoon in Ripley, Surrey with Beverley and Sunny at Owlbrook Competition Stables . The rain had been pouring down and the wind howling in the morning, then afternoon came and the skies cleared to reveal a crisp blue sky and autumnal sunshine. The sweet smell of autumn was in the air, the distinct earthen scent of wet leaves after a long heavy rain. Freshly fallen leaves crunched underfoot and Sunny’s black coat glistened and sparkled in the sunshine.

Misty Morning Walk

23 January 14

Posted at 7:34

On Tuesday morning I woke to find that London, and indeed most of England it seemed, was blanketed in a thick layer of fog. My immediate reaction was one of glee for I knew a walk by the river would be particularly spectacular in these conditions. My, how beautiful and ethereal the world becomes when enveloped in a morning haze. I stood transfixed at the water's edge as the mist lingered over the river and the sun's rays slowly began burning through, gradually warming my face.

.

Here's a short video of my misty morning walk by the river.

Christmas Sparkle

With two weeks to go until Christmas I couldn’t resist sharing the festive pretty I encountered on my recent trip to Cumbria at The Royal Hotel in Kirby Lonsdale. We were greeted by a dazzling display of glistening glass baubles and twinkling fairy lights in Christmassy golds and silvers. The smell of fresh pine needles and cinnamon-scented candles combined to form that sweet smell of nostalgia. A gentle reminder of the precious and joyful time to be spent with family, friends and loved ones, old, young and furry.

Summer fashion shoot for Faulkner & Carter

21 November 13

Posted at 6:53

On a glorious summer’s day in August I photographed the  Faulkner & Carter  SS14 bridal accessories collection. We stood surrounded by meadows for a far as the eye could see. The sun shone, the long grass swayed in the gentle summer breeze and beautiful butterflies fluttered around the flowers. The sweet scent of wild roses gently reminded me that summer was drawing to a close yet there was not a cloud in the sky.

 .

Faulkner & Carter are milliner  Ann-Marie Faulkner and Bridal designer Katie Carter. They have been in the luxury bridal industry for over 10 years, having trained with couture bridal designer Phillipa Lepley and The Queen Mother’s former milliner Rose Cory.

Ann-Marie and Katie are hugely inspired by vintage glamour with many of their pieces being influenced by original designs from the 1920's to the 1960's. They work solely with natural materials with an emphasis on high quality, and love working with fine French laces, silk satins and silk tulles to produce their luxurious range of veils, hats, headpieces and stoles. All of their pieces are designed and made by hand in their London studio.

 .

Faulkner & Carter also offer a bespoke service where they work closely with the bride to design and produce the perfect hat, veil or headpiece.
